Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a crucial stage of development, encompassing both social/emotional and academic growth. At Mercaz Academy our dedicated teachers are committed to encouraging independence and collaboration, and establishing a robust foundation in general academics and Judaic life, as they foster a lifelong love for learning. Mercaz Academy provides an engaging and enjoyable educational experience, preparing children for academic success through an engaging well-rounded program.

Our curriculum emphasizes in Kindergarten (and indeed the curriculum throughout our pre-school and elementary school years) emphasizes each child’s social and emotional development. Inside and outside the classroom, teachers and the school counselor integrate activities and discussions that promote sensitivity, resilience, cooperation, and communication.

The Mercaz Academy Kindergarten General Studies curriculum integrates foundational literacy skills like letter recognition, phonemic awareness, word study and early reading comprehension. Students learn to write through the Writers Workshop approach, with students initiating the process by structuring ideas and crafting sentences around specific themes. In mathematics, we focus on essential concepts like number recognition, counting, ordering numbers, basic addition and subtraction, shapes, measurement, and patterns. Lessons involve practical, hands-on activities with various manipulatives to develop a strong understanding of numbers, guiding children from tangible, real-world experiences to more abstract reasoning. Science is taught through a hands-on, inquiry-based method, giving children opportunities to predict and observe their surroundings as they learn about the world around them. Social studies cover various aspects, including communities, how we as individuals contribute to the community, national holidays, civic activities, and fundamental map and geography skills.

Mercaz Academy's Kindergarten Judaic Studies program offers a comprehensive and immersive experience. Starting each day with tefillah fosters spirituality and gratitude through various prayers. The curriculum accentuates a personal connection to Eretz Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael, exploring Israel's significance, symbols, and the uniqueness of Yerushalayim. Students delve into the Jewish calendar, preparing for Shabbat and Chagim through hands-on experiences, drama, and creative arts. The integration of Hebrew language, from Aleph Bet recognition to conversations and reading activities, contributes to a strong linguistic foundation. Values and ethics, including empathy, tzedakah, and discussions on Jewish values, are woven into the curriculum, creating a holistic educational journey that nurtures a love for learning and a strong Jewish identity.

The Mercaz Academy Kindergarten experience is further enriched by a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students expand their horizons through weekly music classes, a comprehensive physical education program, library and educational technology. They also learn about the environment and helping others through tending our own “Grow Torah” vegetable and herb garden.
